Wrobotiers take on the world

02 July 2010

BATH, UK – July 2 2010 – The Widcombe Wrobotiers, a team of 10 and 11 year olds from Widcombe School, close to Picochip’s HQ in Bath, have taken part in the European Finals of the Lego League Robotics competition, reaching the final eight out of 56 teams and achieving a perfect score on the way.

Despite the Icelandic volcano, flight cancellations and political strife, the Picochip sponsored team made it to the event in Istanbul along with teams from across the world including China, South Korea, South Africa and Mexico.

The ‘Widcombe Wrobotiers' designed a new transport system for Bath, in line with the competition brief of transforming transportation. In the knock-out competition the team qualified for the final 8 with a perfect score of 400, something they had never achieved in competition before. The team then lost out in the quarterfinals to the host team, Turkey, who went on to win overall.

“The team did the UK proud and Picochip is glad to have played a part in making the trip possible,” said Rupert Baines, VP of Marketing at Picochip. “At Picochip we strongly believe in the importance of encouraging engineering talent from an early age and it’s great to hear that the team not only had a great time but did really well in reaching the last eight.”
